Connecting to the Colors Within
The Rainbow in Our Bodies
Happy Monday, let’s talk about chakras.
When I was 17 years old I started going to the library and finding books on spirituality. I found a book talking about chakras and became obsessed with this idea that the rainbow was inside of our bodies.
What?
How?
I needed to know more.
At the same time I started having memories of when my mom died.
I remembered drawing rainbows with the pot of gold at the end. Always with a cloudy sky and the sky peaking through and a tree with a big hole in the center. That hole brought me comfort. If a tree could have a massive hole where eventually a squirrel could come to live in, then I could have a massive hole in my heart and eventually it would get filled with life again.
Anyway, this memory of drawing these images all the time took me back to when she died and I remembered dreaming about her. In my dreams we were either on top of a rainbow talking or under it, I’m not sure it’s all a blur now. I’m sure something about people explaining a rainbow bridge to heaven entered my tiny creative brain and I ran with it.
So there I was 17 years old, obsessed with this idea that the rainbow was in my body and this idea that if I could connect to the rainbow in my body I could also connect to my mom again.
What is a chakra?
It is described as an energy vortex in your body. They are said to spin clockwise when they are in alignment and each one has a color, energy, and element that goes with it. The lower chakras are more dense and spin slower than the upper chakras. Okay, so here’s my first practice with the chakras.
I got a candle and sat on the floor next to my CD player radio. I lit the candle and focused my mind. The book said to close your eyes and see the colors in your body so I started with my legs.
Chakra Meditation
I searched for red colors, but all I saw was black.
I imagined a vibrant red light filling my legs, but still blackness was everywhere.
I went up to the second chakra and imagined orange, still nothing but darkness.
For the third chakra I stared at the tiny flame and imagined it growing in my stomach. I connected to my will power, my inner yellow light, and I imagined it could take me anywhere.
I closed my eyes to move into the heart chakra and saw a glimmer of emerald green.
Then to the blue in the throat chakra, where everything was dark again.
As I traveled to the third eye and imagined indigo, something happened. I saw an image of myself at the bottom of a very dark staircase. There was a light at the top of the staircase, but I had a long way to go to get to it. It felt worth it though, to be bathed in light with each step out of the dark stairwell.
Not sure if I made it to the top chakra, the seventh one at the top of the skull. The one with all the colors, the one that connects us to source energy and our higher power.
I share this with you now because it’s been 24 years since I was that young woman and I am still learning about these powerful energy centers in our bodies.
I have a piece of art on my wall that has a prayer and affirmations for each chakra.
Prayer and Affirmations for the Seven Chakras
May All Beings
Be Here Now
Be Good Enough
Be Strong
Be Love
Be Truthful
Be Peace
Be Free
Be a Bright Shinning Light Showered in Limitless Unconditional Love
May this prayer bring you peace this week and connect you to your body, your movement practice, or a new meditation practice where you explore the colors in your body. It’s okay if you don’t see them.
Taking the time to connect to various parts of your body, breathe intentionally into your body, and focus your mind is a powerful and life changing experience I hope everyone feels.
Love Always,
Danielle Mallett
