You Deserve a Break: A Reminder We Aren't Robots

Ooof, today I keep trying to think of something profound to say, as if putting that pressure on myself will make it materialize. That’s not how creativity works. If anything, it’s pushing my insights away.

So instead, I am writing the first thing that comes to my mind, which is this:

Moms need breaks!

Dads need breaks!

Single people need breaks!

Everyone needs breaks!

We are not robots.

For all the highly sensitive people out there reading this, you might feel extra tender, tired, and overwhelmed right now. Every day of this year has made me question leadership, privilege, and what the heck we’re all doing here.

I’d like to believe that most of us are trying to live our lives as joyfully as we can without creating unnecessary harm and yet, I know not everyone is living this way.

On any given day, there is an absurd amount of negative shit happening, too much to even mention in this short note.

So instead, I’d like to remind you that there is also an absurd amount of good happening. This doesn’t take away from the negative or change it, but it does give the brain a little perspective.

Everyday, the sun continues to shine. The flowers bloom. The bees and birds fly around. We wake up and go about our days, our breath kicks in, and our bodies do an absurd amount of work to keep us alive.

It’s all a tiny miracle, and sometimes we need a break from the constant list of things we have to do.

Sometimes we need to lay flat and stare out the window, listen to music, watch a couple of movies, whatever it is that helps you rest.

We aren’t able to show up for others or ourselves if we don’t take these tiny moments to reset.

Will it be perfect? No.

Will you feel like never leaving your bed again? Possibly.

Will you get up anyway and continue on? Yes.

And will feel a tiny bit better for doing it? Yes.

So if you can take a break today, do it!

If not, do it tomorrow.

If your schedule is packed, find a break in it and schedule in rest, otherwise your body will do it for you because it knows you need to rest.

It's okay to be human, to take breaks, and to be imperfect.

Love Always,

Danielle Mallett
