The Miracle of Growing Old

The Monterey Bay Aquarium

Today I took my kids to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and on the way I passed this old woman using a walker.

My kids nearly ran her over, but she didn’t mind. Then another old woman, but younger than the woman with the walker, stood beside her and said, “yeah mom you’re good using that walker.”

My heart nearly melted.

The idea of growing old enough to witness your daughter be old is just too much for this sensitive heart.

Neither of my direct grandma’s got to experience the joy of parenting their daughters beyond their 20s.

My aunt died before her 13th birthday.

My mom died at 23 years young.

When I see proof of life and the miracle of growing old, it reminds me what is possible.

Something about hearing a 70 or 80 year old woman talk about their 50 or 60 year old daughter just wraps my entire body in this cozy eternal hug.

There is time

For some of us there is time.

If you are lucky enough to be here. Make the best of your time.

If you’ve lost a daughter or child, find children who have lost parents.

We need each other.

There’s this incredible local organization called CASA and they connect adults with children who need advocates.

CASA Of Monterey

Don’t give up, you’re still here for a reason.

Love always,

Danielle Mallett
